Trouble with Raleigh:
Raleigh had spent 40,000 pounds equivalent to over a million dollars to try to settle an English colony on the East Coast of America. He gave up the project but vowed to live to see America an English Nation. Raleigh was alive when Jamestown was settled in 1607. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London for reasons where no reason could justifiably serve.
Queen Elizabeth died in 1603. King James 1 came to the Throne in England. Sir Walter Raleigh was accused of being involved in a plot to oust the King. In spite of Raleigh’s claim of innocence and his brilliant defense he was found guilty on extremely doubtful evidence. He was convicted of treason and sentenced to death by beheading. After the verdict of guilty was declared an anonymous letter was given to the King claiming to have presented false evidence against Raleigh.
At that time Raleigh was committed to the Tower and remained in prison for the next twelve years. While he was in prison from 1603 to 1617 he wrote “The Unfinished History of the World.” from Creation to 130 BC , published in 1614 with 11 editions published in the next 73 years. “The Lie”... (a bitter attack on worldliness) and “Passionate Man’s Pilgrimage.” Raleigh was known as the Last of the Elizabethans. Although his efforts for colonization were not successful he deserves credit for initiating the movement which led to the English settlement in America.
