Landing in America.

On October 12,1492 at 2 O'clock in the morning Columbus and his crew landed on an Island that is now thought to be Watling’s Island. Columbus named the Island San Salvador. meaning “Holy Redeemer.” Columbus believed this little island to be part of the West Indies since he had reached it by sailing westward. He called the natives inhabiting the land “Indians.” When Columbus and his men first reached the Land they kissed the soil and with tears gave thanks to God for crowning their voyage with success. Columbus never found out his mistake regarding this country.

He made three more voyages but he died firmly convinced that America was part of Asia and that he had discovered a shorter route from Europe to the Indies. He was criticized and mocked after he had reported of the new land found. the people used such phrases as “Founder of Mosquito Land.” Christopher Columbus died heart broken and in poverty in 1506. He often spoke of hearing a desire in his deep inward thoughts: “To loose the gates fast shut with chains.” Columbus had discovered America, the Land where many fled from religious persecution to the Home of the Free.

(Born Christoforo Colombo (CristĆ³bal ColĆ³n in Castilian, the language of his choice) in the Italian port city of Genoa in 1451, the young mariner went to sea)

There is no more reason to doubt that Christopher Columbus was Genoan born and a christian steadfast in his faith and proud of his native city (Ancient Sea Port of Genoa on the Italian Shores of the Mediterranean) than there is to doubt that George Washington was a Virginian born Anglican of the English race and proud to be an American.
