Good and Bad times of First Colony:
 Deputy Governor:

Ralph Lane. Governor White and the Second Lost Colony. The explorers were delighted with the native Americans and spent several weeks eating and drinking merrily with the “Real Men.” When the first two ships Raleigh had sent out had returned to England the Queen was so highly pleased with the Good Land that Raleigh named it Virginia in honor of the Queen’s virgin life. In 1585 Raleigh sent out 108 emigrants with Deputy Governor Ralph Lane.

The Roanoke Colony reached westward to the Mississippi River. To quote the Deputy Governor Ralph Lane: “These colonists had little understanding, less discretion and more tongue than was needful!” After less than a year of hardships they returned to England but the real success they are known for is bringing the potato back to Europe. Raleigh was disappointed that his colony had given up but Sir Walter Raleigh’s heart was still set on succeeding in planting an English colony in America. In 1587 Raleigh sent another colony.

Many who went took their families this time. Deputy Governor John White was to act as Governor for Raleigh this time. Governor White’s daughter was the wife of one of the settlers. She gave birth to a daughter, the first child born of English parents in America and was Baptized by the name of Virginia Dare. Due to so many hardships Governor White had to sail back to England to seek help and left his family to await his return.

Circumstances beyond his control forbade him to return for three years. When he did return he found no one on Roanoke Island. The only trace was Croatan carved in bold letters on a tree. Before Governor White had left the colonists agreed if they left the island they would carve their destination on the tree. If they left in distress they were to carve a Cross above the destination. There was no Cross and in spite of continuous searches they were never found.
