Climate Change and the Upcoming Meeting of the (Socialist) Minds in Paris

By Gary Hancock:

In a few weeks hundreds of representatives of foreign governments and the U.S. will be meeting in Paris, France to further consolidate and solidify their ambitions for socialism’s planet-wide control over businesses and individuals at the altar of climate change. (The term socialism, in regards to the U.S. especially, is used in its more contemporary connotation of social engineering through elitist big-government, not hard-over in its classic sense. The terms for other social-control philosophies such as fascism, collectivism, or statism would work just as well in that sentence.)

The Paris meeting, under the banner of the United Nations, is intended to effect agreement on further reducing greenhouse gas emissions, most prominently CO2. President Obama’s pledge for the U.S. is a reduction to about 28% less than that produced in 2005, by the year 2025. That’s a tall order and will, in monetary terms, cost about $73 billion per year to attempt as reported in a piece by The Daly Caller. That’s on top of the already $26 billion per year impacting the U.S. economy to meet current greenhouse gas emission standards. All of that money and effort, and the additional cost (loss) of tens of thousands of jobs are expected to reduce global temperatures by – get ready – a whopping .02 degrees Celsius by the year 2100 as reported in a research piece by the Cato Institute.

Reasonable minds would have by now put the brakes on such a huge economic hit for such a small return on human monetary and labor investment. Furthermore, there is plenty of research lending genuine skepticism to the very premise of the apocalyptic anthropogenic climate change scare drummed by Al Gore and others (many of whom rely on funding provided by the very government pushing the climate change alarm).

Consider just a short sampling of items:

> The predictions and claims of Al Gore, who really got the climate change ball rolling about a decade ago with his book and movie, An Inconvenient Truth, have been debunked, such as: imminent and sharply rising global temperatures; vanishing arctic ice by 2014; polar bears drowning; and the melting snows on Mount Kilimanjaro and evaporation of lake Chad which were eventually acknowledged as due to other causes.

> Earth’s temperature has remained virtually steady for more than 18 years (Climate Depot report, June 2015), while practically all the computer models of the climate change promoters had predicted dire temperature increases during that time.

> In direct contradiction to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and claims by President Obama, professor Roger Pielke, in testimony before a House subcommittee on the environment, as one of the world’s foremost experts on climate change, concluded that floods, hurricanes and tornadoes have not increased in frequency or intensity, and that droughts are less frequent, shorter in duration and cover less area than in the past.

> Patrick Moore, the cofounder of the worldwide environmental group Greenpeace, in his article in March 2015 entitled “Why I am a Climate Change Skeptic,” cited the gradual warming of the planet for the last 300 years, “since the Little Ice Age ended,” and that this phenomenon was “long before heavy use of fossil fuels.” He conceded, “I am skeptical humans are the main cause of climate change…” Furthermore, he said, “The idea it would be catastrophic if carbon dioxide were to increase and average global temperature were to rise a few degrees is preposterous.”

> Contrary to calamitous predictions of melting polar ice (and the widespread heralding of reduced polar ice by the climate change sycophant mainstream media) there has been no drastic or even mild decrease in the amount of polar ice. According to NASA data as reported in a Forbes piece by James Taylor in May 2015, satellite observations “reveal the Earth’s polar ice caps have not receded at all since … 1979.” and that “total polar ice extent has largely remained above the post-1979 average.” As it turns out, the baseline year set as 1979 was a higher than normal year for polar sea ice, so when ice levels naturally declined from that high level the climate change alarmists seized on that occurrence as proof of the impending climate change disaster. Importantly, NASA now confirms, as reported by NASA News on November 6, 2015, that new research indicates that Antarctic ice, in fact, dramatically increased by about 1.4 trillion tons between 1992 and 2008, and as the report directly states, “The research challenges the conclusions of other studies, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) 2013 report, which says that Antarctica is overall losing land ice.”

> A study led by Yale University involving researchers from 15 countries announced September 2, 2015 that there are nearly 8 times more trees in the world than had been previously estimated: 3 trillion vs. 400 billion. And, to state the obvious, trees gobble up huge amounts of CO2. It is also being postulated that a larger expanse of trees now occurring is because of the favorable slight increase in the atmospheric CO2 level, which for hundreds of years was at lower levels than plants and trees had enjoyed further in the past. In fact, as Patrick Moore mentions, higher levels of CO2 are, in fact, desired and will result in continued higher crop productions and increased tree populations. He points out that, yes, the current CO2 level is about 400 parts per million, up from about 280 ppm a couple of hundred years ago, but further increases would actually be beneficial as “[t]he optimum level of carbon dioxide for plant growth, given enough water and nutrients, is about 1,500 parts per million.”

> The Sun’s activity has a pronounced effect on global climate change. In apaper published by Nature Geoscience in 2014 a distinct correlation between Sun activity and climate variations on Earth are noted, specifically related to Greenland, but extrapolating the findings, while difficult to directly translate to a global scale, would nonetheless indicate a global-wide link. In a piece by Breitbart it was noted, based on a new Chinese study, that “[t]he impact of carbon dioxide on climate change may have been overstated, with solar activity giving a better explanation of changes in the Earth’s temperature…”

> Earth’s volcanic activity has as much or more influence on global climate change than originally thought and possibly more than manmade causes. An article from the Consulting Geologist website, Volcanic Carbon Dioxide, explains that volcanic activity in total, not just the classic surface eruptions, but including the lesser publicized but far greater in number passive emissions through vents and some 139,000 active submarine volcanoes, spew and leak vast amounts of CO2 and other matter particulates into the oceans and atmosphere (and at greater amounts than climate-change alarmists dare to admit – my editorial comment). The article further concludes: “This leaves us with no empirical method by which we may attribute the 20th century rise in CO2 to human energy consumption.”

> The Heartland Institute in a 2014 report through the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) states that the IPCC of the United Nations “…is continuing its pattern of selectively reporting data to present an alarmist view of the impacts of climate change.” Further, through accumulated scientific research, the report concludes that “[a]ny human global climate signal is so small as to be nearly indiscernible against the background variability of the natural climate system.” And, “[n]o unambiguous evidence exists of dangerous interference in the global climate caused by human-related CO2 emissions.” The report also says that higher levels of CO2, taking all factors into account, are overall beneficial to plant, bacteria, aquatic and human life.

> Anthropogenic climate change is not settled science. As reported by Business Insider in April 2012, a group of 49 NASA scientists and administrators sent a letter “admonishing the agency for its role in advocating a high degree of certainty that man-made CO2 is a major cause of climate change while neglecting empirical evidence that calls the theory into question.” A piece in Forbes cited a survey among 1,077 respondent scientists that a “strong majority” said “nature is the primary cause of recent global warming.” As The Wall Street Journal reported in a commentary in May, 2014 the claim that “97% of scientists agree that climate is real, man-made and dangerous” is a cherry-picked number from a small sampling and is simply not true.

Considering all the legitimate skepticism and opposing evidence surrounding the ‘settled science’ of anthropogenic climate change and the certain calamitous fate of the world, why would government elites refuse to have intelligent, open and compelling debates on this subject, instead of being so intent on simply repeating the mindless climate change mantra? The path government has chosen and will extend at the upcoming Paris climate change summit requires huge financial sacrifices, the shuttering of entire business sectors such as coal, and the loss of tens of thousands of jobs in order to produce even a minute reduction in the projected rise in global temperature. In light of this disturbing and seemingly incongruous chasm between reason and governmental action, you might wonder whether there is something else going on, some alternate agenda. You bet there is.

Not to ignore the unmistakable fact and motivator that there’s a lot of money to be made in the name of climate change (cite Al Gore who has accrued a large fortune touting climate change hysteria), the goal of the ideologue government-elite is control. These human manipulators crave control over every individual and business endeavor, and their craving is insatiable.

Government elites have induced a cult-like following of sycophants and unquestioning zealots surrounding the climate change issue, clearing the way for unsecured justifications to coerce laws and policies that socialists (again, the substitution of any of the following would fit nicely: fascists, collectivists, statists) would have salivated at a few generations ago. Climate change offers the socialist manipulators a common cause around which they can unite – a cause that they have branded dire and settled, above question, and for which they alone hold deliverance. If only we recalcitrant individuals, climate change deniers, would complete the capitulation to them of the power they declare is needed to save us, at the mere cost of our pocketbooks and freedoms, all will be well. Bunk!

More than enough data are available to support hypotheses of non-anthropogenic causes of climate change and perhaps even a net benefit to a rise in global temperature. That data, if honestly reviewed, should thwart the government elites of their ravenous frenzy for immediate power and control regarding their claims of looming manmade climate change catastrophe. Our politicians and administrators owe us, and must provide us with, truthful, tangible and authentic information, not propaganda. If they refuse, which they certainly have done so far, we must replace them with those who will. The upcoming Paris meeting would be a fine place for them to publicly pronounce their responsibility to us and the world and come clean with the truth.
