Brewster and Raleigh:

Raleigh

Brewster
We can imagine it to be very likely that Brewster and Raleigh were in service of the Queen Elizabeth together in the late 1500s. It is recorded that they were both in service of the Queen but Brewster was an assistant to William Davidson, Secretary of State, and Raleigh was Captain of the Guards---- Still, Raleigh sits in prison with a burning desire to stop the persecution but can only write and express his deep heart feelings and his knowledge of the hardships before he was imprisoned had, no doubt, caused sleepless nights imagining the escalation of what was happening while he could do nothing but hope to write and publish for future generations the history he prayed would never be repeated.

I like to believe that William Brewster shared his motto with Sir Walter Raleigh. We do know Raleigh was highly respected by the Pilgrims and definitely on their side. William Brewster’s motto: “Man is altogether vanity. He passes away as a shadow. His only true home is Heaven. Strangers and Pilgrims indeed, are we on this earth. Still the spot on which we stand; this shore; this new familiar scene. This whole land becomes dearer daily, if it were not only for the precious dust which we have committed to its bosom. Here, rather than elsewhere, (Raleigh’s Heartland, America) would I sleep when mine own hour is come. Here would I have my body reposed with those endeared ones who have shared exceeding labors and whose burdens are now unlocked forever.

I would be near them in the last day and have a part in resurrection. Evident it is to me, that it is our Master’s will to stand or fall in this Land. Did not His Providential hand open the way in every difficulty? We believe this moment to be from Him. Let us stand in our lot. Generation to generation will God’s Blessings descend.”
