The year of 1607 Miracles Happened.
While Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London the Pilgrims were ever in his heart and on his mind. The London Company was preparing to sail for the Jamestown expedition and settle the Virginia colony in the year of 1607 when everything was seemed to come together at once. The Pilgrims and the Puritans were different sects of religions, although both were severely persecuted for their beliefs. the Puritans believed they should stay in the Church of England to help reform the corruption while the Pilgrims left the church of England and fled from the persecution.
They were also called Separatists or Congregationalists. They hoped to escape to Switzerland, which was the only country free at that time due to a truce with the Dutch and the Spanish Inquisition which would endure from 1608 to 1620. The restriction by the World Church Authorities on printing any books by decree are summed up by Professor McGinnis: “Any books printed or published against the Queen’s injunctions ordered or letters patent is liable to forfeit and any printer or publisher responsible for such books will suffer 3 months imprisonment and will not be permitted to print again.
The selling, binding, and printing of secretly printed books is likewise prohibited.” The wardens of the stationer’s company were given power to seize all suspected places, to seize all books printed against the Queen’s ordinances and to arrest anyone involved in the printing, binding or sale. Every printing press was registered and the number of presses for each printer was limited.
The (so called) “religious propaganda” and contraband had to be printed in secret. Robert Walter Grave in London was known as a printer in Puritan works. At midnight in 1588 his printing press room was raided and all his books seized. This was the last straw for the Puritans. They left the Church of England and gathered at Scrooby to worship in secret with Brewster and the Pilgrims.
