The Secret Church:

Even before the days of Raleigh under Queen Elizabeth there was a secret church. They had no consecrated building but they met in private houses. They separated and met in great peril. Torment rose from the Smithfield martyr days. This group formed in Scrooby near Brewster.

Quoting Pierce: “They came from all different parts of the city threading their way under the most difficult conditions to the secret meetings for worship and church fellowship undeterred by the danger of imprisonment, ruinous fines, and the gallows. Two of their leaders, Henry Barrow and John Greenwood were in prison awaiting execution when they fled. Before the Pilgrims reached Holland, Switzerland they went through terrible times.

In 1607 they were not even allowed to leave London to go to Holland. They were hunted down and robbed of their belongings, thrown in prison, and after a month, were ordered to return to their original residence. In September of that year Brewster made plans to go to Netherlands where the truce for peace with Spain was about to take effect in 1608.

The ship was to leave River Haven near Boston in Lincolnshire on the east coast of London but when they reached the Dutch ship they found they had been betrayed by the Ship Master. They were put out in open boats and robbed of their belongings and at daylight were taken to Boston and paraded through the streets and then taken to the guild hall to appear before the Magistrate.

They were treated decently by the Boston authorities but they had to hold them there till they received word from the Council Table in London. Some were distributed through families of that city till word returned. Seven men were kept in prison in stone cells under the Court Room. Brewster’s wife and three children had to make their own way back to Scrooby. Still, they immediately began planning another escape to Holland.
