Halleck’s History Public School text book 1926” William Brewster 1567-1644 Leader of the Pilgrims:
Brewster was born in Nottinghamshire, England. He attended Cambridge University. For a short period he was in service of Queen Elizabeth’s Assistant Secretary of State, William Davidson. After Davidson fell from favor Brewster returned to the town of Scrooby and became the deacon of the Pilgrims, who, at that time, were called the “Separatists” or “The Congregationalists.” He allowed the Pilgrims to worship in his house at Scrooby and assisted the weak to get to Holland. Later in America Brewster proved a good Samaritan to the sick and helpless. He supported himself in Holland by teaching English.
In 1616 William Brewster and Thomas Brewer secretly began printing religious books in Holland for exporting to England but upon the complaint of the English Ambassador the Dutch authorities seized the books and arrested Thomas Brewer. William Brewster managed to escape the arrest and later went to London, where with Robert Cushman he obtained a Land Patent for colonization from the Virginia Company. Sailing on the Mayflower in 1620 Brewster helped to found the Plymouth Colony in America. Brewster was never a minister in the official sense but he has been considered down through history to have been the real Leader of the Pilgrims.
