Journey to America by W. Pierce:
The how, why, when and where of it all:

The only English Settlement in America, at that time, when the Pilgrims fled to Holland, (1607) was the Jamestown Settlement in Virginia. The Pilgrims could not go to that part of the country for no worship but that of the Church of England was permitted there. They had to get King James’ permission to go. He did not openly favor their departure to America but eventually consented to their request. Most of the Pilgrims were poor and needed help in getting to America. A company of English merchants agreed to help them under these trying conditions.

1) They were to work seven years without a single day off except Sundays.

2) At the end of seven years all that the Pilgrims had accumulated was to be divided equally with the English merchants. Though these conditions were hard for the Pilgrims they thought of the Religious War brewing in Holland with the Spaniards. A second thing to consider was the fact that their children were growing up among those whose language and customs were not English.

Most importantly, they desired to be in a land where they and their posterity might enjoy political and religious freedom according to their standards of what was just and right.
