The Patriots Daily Bites of American History Series, Volume 2
American History 2, volume 2, by Halleck’s History American text book 1926 page 198:
Life and qualities of George Washington:

Washington was without a doubt the ablest of the American Generals. He was serving without pay. Ingratitude under such conditions would have caused many to resign. The fact that he did not was due to his patience, love of country and high sense of duty. No one had surpassed Washington in character, which that alone makes all other qualities worth while. He could be depended upon one hundred times out of one hundred to take the path of duty. If he had once failed, America might not have secured her independence.

For these qualities George Washington stands in the front rank of the world’s greatest men. England, his former foe, welcomes statues of him in her own Land and is proud that he sprang from her Blood. London erected a statue of Washington in 1921. Washington was born February 22,1732 on a plantation in Virginia. At sixteen he had received sufficient schooling to enable him to earn his living. He could write well, figure correctly, keep accounts and survey land accurately. He was then employed as a surveyor in the wildest uninhabited part of Virginia. He slept in the open air wrapped in a bear skin. He cut wood, built fires, shot game, and cooked it.

Washington never excused himself from taking his part in the service for his country by asking, “What can my country do for me?” but his question was “What can I do for my country?”  Washington’s letter published in Claypoole’s “American Daily Adventures” 1796
