The Next Decade:
 1607 to 1617:

Many interesting things happened in Virginia during the next decade, though only a few are mentioned. A great day in the colony was when a ship brought into Jamestown more than 90 young women to be the wives of the settlers. Other groups of women followed the first band and many of the women found husbands in Virginia. The use of tobacco, which Raleigh had introduced to England when the colonists brought it back from the Indians, had become very popular.

There was a great demand for all the tobacco the colonists could raise. The Virginians sold their tobacco to England and got their supplies from them in return. Tobacco made many Virginians prosperous. Soon fine homes began to spring up along the river. Raleigh had been executed the year before but 1619 is an important date to remember because it is the date the first assemble of the people was held in Virginia.

Raleigh had been imprisoned for 12 years, although he lived comfortable surrounded by servants and family but his heart was focused on the Heart Land and freeing the persecuted Pilgrims. He regained his freedom in 1617 for a short time by convincing the king he knew of a gold mine. The king released him and sent him on an expedition to find the gold mine but Raleigh disobeyed and fought again for the persecuted Pilgrims by attacking the Spaniards. The king had forbade him to fight the Spaniards. Raleigh was arrested again and his execution was carried through in 1618.
