Beware of the Pharisees.
Jackson AKJV Preface 1875 The reason for the severe persecution is because the Pharisees considered themselves to be most qualified and set themselves on an equal footing of God’s laws. In many ways they created reasons for new laws to define God’s laws making god’s laws of none effect. They used every form of harsh discipline. There was a disgusting hypocrisy and self deceit in everything they did. They made long public prayers and gave to the poor only when seen by men. By the 1500s the christian world was divided by the Catholics and the Protestants. This began the Protestant Reformation. In those days education was wholly in the hands of the clergy. The people were taught that the requirements of the church were necessary to secure Heavenly Salvation. Under the “Benefits of the Clergy” a man could be a priest or a monk and carry on criminal practices. If he were caught he would receive only light sentences under the decree of the Church Council.
